I stopped a robbery last night...

I went down to a volunteer's house after an event on campus.
We were in the alley behind his house where his car was parked exchanging some campaign material.
I noticed a guy walking by, alone.

A minute or so later I heard yelling and gravel being scuffed so I popped out from behind a garage to see about 5 or 6 male blacks in long white shirts beating the guy.  There were also two women a little further off.
Since I was coming from the OSU Criminal Protection Zone, I was unarmed, so I yelled "I'm calling the police!"

The attack broke up and I watched the group from concealment and reported their movements to the police dispatcher.
Once they were out of sight, my volunteer and I decided to go check on the victim.
I grabbed my tactical baton just in case and went back to the scene of the beating to find the victim, dazed, wandering around in the street looking for his glasses.

We got the victim calmed down and eventually a cruiser came into view so we flagged him down.
When the police arrived they were focused on the paperwork at the outset and had no interest in finding the "kids" (all easily in their 20's and around 6' tall).
When I described the attackers as having long white shirts, a female officer said "gangs" and shrugged apathetically.

Anyway, my friend is questioning whether or not a dog, a knife, or pepper spray is sufficient weaponry to stave off attacks from groups of 7 or 8 thugs.

The victim had a European accent and said his name was "Constantine".  I'm glad we were there to save him.  Maybe he'll reconsider walking alone in alleys at night.

Here's a link to the police report - no mention of my intervention to stop the attack, merely documentation that it happened.  You might have to click it, agree to their terms, then click on it again to actually see the report.
